Mr. Schoeni was born and raised in Northern Ohio. He worked in private practice in St. Paul,
Minnesota and then as litigation counsel for Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Company before
accepting a position as an associate at Kohnen & Patton in January 1985. He became a partner
in 1991.
Mr. Schoeni has extensive civil trial experience in both state and federal courts. His practice areas
include the prosecution and defense of products liability, employer intentional tort, sexual abuse,
securities fraud, legal malpractice, construction defect and general personal injury claims, as well as
commercial disputes involving breach of contract, unfair competition, and related matters. He also
frequently is called upon to draft insurance coverage opinions and prosecute and/or defend
declaratory judgment actions. He has also served as an expert witness in insurance litigation.
Mr. Schoeni often relies on alternative methods of dispute resolution. He has experience as an
arbitrator, a mediator and an advocate in private and court sanctioned arbitrations and mediations.He has also handled disputes submitted to the American Arbitration Association.
Mr. Schoeni is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell. He is annually recognized as one of Ohio’s Super
Lawyers by Law & Politics in conjunction with Cincinnati Magazine. He was a member of the
faculty for several years for the Cincinnati Bar Association’s Trial Advocacy Institute. He has also
presented papers to various local, state and national organizations on a wide variety of topics
including sexual abuse and harassment policies for religious institutions, analysis of Daubert
decisions in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and establishing effective relationships between
general counsel and local counsel.
Mr. Schoeni was a member of the inaugural class of the Cincinnati Academy of Leadership for Lawyers in 1997 and served as a member of the CALL Ethics Subcommittee for several years.
He was an active member of the Civility Taskforce Subcommittee of the Professionalism Committee
of the Cincinnati Bar Association in 1999-2000 and assisted in drafting the Report and
Recommendation for presentation to the Professionalism Committee to address issues of incivility in
the Cincinnati Bar Association. He has served on various boards and committees of his church and
of non-profit organizations in his community.
